Solaris Zones Support

How much interest is there in seeing TeamSite fully support Solaris Zones?
Would you find it useful to be able to install TS in a local zone?
What about being able to run multiple instances of TS on the same machine?

It is an OS-level virtualization that lets you create multiple slices of the OS. It is much lighter weight than something like vmware or even logical domains.

It looks like I'm the only one but I would be very interested in running multiple instances on the same machine, preferably different versions of TS.

No--not the only one. I would like to do that also to consolidate some hardware. For example, I would run our dev and test box on one host if possible. Zones would be the preferred approach given how easy and simple they are to implement. Even without support for zones, this is possible on boxes that support multiple physical domains (ala m4000/m5000) and boxes that support ldoms (similar to Zen hypervisor):

In 5.5.2 I installed TS on a mulit-domain box (I doubt it was a Zone back then, but maybe). It was on the virtual slice and there were a bunch of other apps on other slices. I had some trouble getting Tagger to work (communicating to TS) but that was it.

However I did not have 2 TS instances on that, so I do not know if the driver was visible to each.

My guess is the TeamSite kernel driver would not mix well with zones. Generally, zones don't give you access to raw devices. For example, you cannot run "snoop" or "lofs" in a zone. I *think* you can override some of these options, but then you start to lose your security model.

Zones only work with Solaris 10+, so that would have been a box that support physical domains such as a 4810 and other serengeti boxes.

As indicated above, zones are not supported and will not work. However, from last weeks GearUp Europe User Group Session, TeamSite 6.7.2. should support LDOMs Not bad and better then zones really.

I did this with TS 5.5.2, I know they upgraded to 6.5 a year ago, never heard any issues.

It worked nicely for a Dev or Test environment. I do not know if I would do a prod environment with it.

I had to play with some config settings (localhost was not set for the VM) so there was a little monkeying with the iw.cfg required, but it was not tough. Getting MT to work was the most difficult (that was 3.5, 4.X should be much easier)
