Error opening Word file using iOS Word client with OTC file location

I’m getting an error when I attempt to open a Word document straight from the native iOS Word app that was previously saved to my OTC Location. The error is “Can’t open file. Sorry, something went wrong and .docx can’t open.” I noticed that I was not logged into OTC via the native iOS client. Once I logged in, when I went back into Word to open the file, there was no issue.

In my opinion, when I go to open a file, it should then switch over to the OTC client and prompt me for a login, not tell me that something went wrong.

(FYI I am using the latest versions of OTC and Word for iOS.)

Thanks, David

  • Hi David,

It sounds like the error you are seeing is the error message coming from the native iOS Word app. I agree that it would be a better experience to automatically direct you to the OTC client app, but I'm not certain that this is functionality that we can have an impact on. I believe that Microsoft caches recent document titles and locations but does not check if those are accessible or still exist until they are clicked on. I also don't think that they pass through any information that they get in the error response when trying to access that data. "Something went wrong" appears to be included in all of their generic responses when something fails, so we would need them to provide capability to pass through error messages in order to customize it. Beyond that, allowing for an external application to automatically redirect for login would likely create a security vulnerability and present opportunities for phishing scams to capture password and user information.

From our side, we try to improve the experience by providing long lived Core mobile sessions so that you don't need to log in very often. In addition, we tried to make it easy to open in other applications, so that you can start in the Core app first and edit the documents as needed from the native applications.

    Thanks,
