Opening an LLSession with a cookie

The LAPI documentation indicates that you can initiate an LLSession object using the current browser connection information that is encoded in a cookie by Livelink. I carefully followed the example as shown on p.192 of the LAPI Developer's Reference, but my Java applet still won't work. Does anyone have any examples or experience they could share that could add to my understanding of the documentation?
