What colour is your Livelink?
Robert_Davies_(unlondonadmin_-_(deleted))
Hi folks.Attached to this posting you will find a document that lists most of the customization's we are currently looking at.I hope that some of these may resonate with you and your users. I also hope you may start posting lists of your own. I'm interested in what other people think would improve the product. Can I be alone in that?If any of our suggestions are interesting to you then please say. I will try and prioritize those items that are of greatest benefit to the widest number of Livelink developers.Obviously we would also welcome any offers of collaboration and knowledge/effort sharing. So, what colour is your Livelink?Best regards/matt.

Matt,Thanks for posting your list. Some of the things look as if they would/will be a good feature.I agree with your comment on Livereports, "Replace with a proper reporting package"! They are a pain. I often get asked to produce a livereport to display this, that and the other and end up explaining to my boss why I can't, rather than saying "Ok". We normally resort back to using Cognos Impromptu (a good tool). As yet at Sun Valley we don't possess a copy of the SDK so our customisations are very limited (it's something we are thinking about for the future). I tend to browse the SDK discussions to get a feel for what can and can't be achieved using the SDK, how easy it is (or not), and whether the customisations will work with future releases - if not, how much recoding/hacking of code is required. Comments welcome!By the way - i saw the clip in yesterdays "Computing" about Livelink at your Uni!Regards,Steve

We would like to see a utility program that allows us to move LL Nodes from one instance of Livelink to another. Anyone else interested in this?
Robert_Davies_(unlondonadmin_-_(deleted))
Hi John.If you mean you want to be able to share things like Projects, Discussions, Folders,... between Livelink instances then yes I think we would be interested. For the future I would be interested in how you might go about linking different Livelink servers together in extranet configuration.Best regards/matt.

We would love to have something like this. We want to be able to simulate a real development environment and then promote the necessary items into production.I have a feeling that this would be increadibly complex though.

In the 8.1 version of Livelink Explorer you are suppose to be able to open 2 explorer windows on different livelink servers to drag and drop between them. My guess is that it would be similar to a copy and the new item would inherit the ACLs from the destination server. So if you're not worried about making an exact copy (owner, create date, etc) on the second system this might do the trick.

We here at Morningstar have created a product called ContentMover. It is designed to move standard Livelink objects (documents, folder, projects, etc.) from one instance to another. If anyone is interested, or would like more information, please feel free to call or write:Darryn GrahamMorningstar Systems, Inc.(410) 902-7633 ext 15dgraham@mstarsys.com

Can this move information between databases as well? We have two livelink instances pointing to two different databases. In some instances we have a need to be able to drag from one database to another, which was available with the wide client in the days of old.
Robert_Davies_(unlondonadmin_-_(deleted))
Hi.Darryn from Morningstar would be much better able to tell you about this, however...Their current tool ContentMover can, as I understand it, move nodes from one livelink instance to another. That is from one separate livelink instance running against one database, to another completely separate livelink instance running against another separate database. What I suggested to them was that it would be far more interesting to have a tool that could synchronize certain areas of two Livelink servers. E.g. you mark a discussion for synchronization and it automagically copies all new postings between them (tracking the node-id's).These might be overkill in your situation. If I remember right there is an OTC partner with a VB program that allows you to drag nodes between livelink servers. Has anyone else ever heard of this? If you don't get any joy, try mailing Andrew Woolstone who might know what I'm talking about.Best regards/matt.

We setup and have been using a Livelink Extranet for a couple years now, and it works great and has been very beneficial. We didn't setup two databases though. We have one Livelink database ( on a separate computer from the Livelink servers ) inside our firewall and Livelink servers running both inside and outside the firewall. The Livelink server outside the firewall is setup with no data ( well it has the Livelink splash screen html page but that's all ), just the Netscape and Livelink software. It has a special 'hole' through the firewall that allows the Livelink cgi to communicate via Sybase Open Client to the the Sybase database inside the firewall. The firewall restricts it to communicating only with that box on the designated port, and won't allow any further intrusion into the IP network inside. The Netscape server outside the firewall is running SSL so any documents, discussion text, etc. moving between the server, across the internet to the users browser or back, is encrypted. This has the advantage of everyone being in sync, and the 'road-warrior' capability of being able to get at your stuff securely from anywhere you can get an internet connection. And if you have a cable, ISDN or ADSL modem at home, you can access all that stuff at much higher speed than you ever could dialing in the the remote access network. We even made it easy for the roadwarriors to use the same bookmarks for Livelink intranet and extranet, by setting up a non-secure Livelink server on the extranet server machine, that redirects them to the Livelink secure server. So if some project in the company wants to include a consultant from the UK, they just sponsor a Livelink account for that person, give them a url and away they go. We keep all these outside folks in a Group called 'Extranet Users' and we can use that to restrict them from seeing things in the Enterprise that we consider the be only for employees. We have even used it to publish public information by distributing a URL or putting a link on a web page accessible from outside. That link points to the Livelink fetch or view objectid for the document of interest and contains an embedded login username and password for a guest account designed for this purpose. The guest account can see but not modify a certain restricted set of documents. This way we can manage the documents in Livelink, yet still allow them to be readily accessed.

Yes, ContentMover will move Livelink objects between two separate Livelink database instances. If you'd like more ino, feel free to contact me.Darryn GrahamMorningstar Systems, Inc.(410) 902-7633 ext 15dgraham@mstarsys.com

I agree. A tool like that would make our lives much simpler. For instance, if you add a document to a folder named PRODUCTION in one database, it would know to immediately move that document into the pre-determined folder in the second database. This would be wonderful for us for we have a separate database for internal and external users and we tend to put only finished documents in the external database.

I'll send you an email. Thanks.

Can you tell me the performance on your Extranet? How do the Livelink Servers response in Intranet and Extranet? We encountered a slow response with the Livelink server situated in the DMZ zone, the one behind the firewall (the Intranet one) behaves good. Just wonder what makes the Extranet one slowed down?
