creating browse windows

On many forms (like the post topic form) it is possible to Browse Livelink. Clicking on this opens a module window from which you can select information. This uses the 'window.open' function. I wish to do the same thing but collecting other information. Can anyone tell me where the functionality of the windows.open function is documented (if at all) and where the code is located.
