Customizing columns under the Project Items

We would like to customize the columns displayed in the Project Workspace Items list. For example we need to display and sort on document number and document type. We don't need the modified information. We would create a category for these attributes. Also, we need to remove the NOWRAP element from the document name TD tag.We are new to any customization and I was wondering if anyone has done this or could point us towards some documentation. Thanks.
