Changing Task status strings from 'Pending' , 'In Progress' etc to a new string

The default values for a 'Task' can be 'Pending' , 'IN progress' , 'Completed' 'Issued'. Is there a simple way to change these values , both in the select box that appears in the task creation form and in the display that is returned by the "browsetasklist.html" file?Any comments, be them vague or specific would be very gratefully recieved.
