Calling External Programs from Builder
x-fercuser6_-_(deleted)
Hi.I'm working on a project that requires an external application be run based on a workflow event trigger. I just assumed that I would easily be able to call this program from builder, but after reading through the references at hand, it seems that there is no facility for calling external programs from within builder. Is there a way to call external programs??Regards,Steve Klosky

I'm a real Livelink newbie but since no one else has responded to your query I'll give you my 1/2 cent of knowledge:There is no direct support for COM or API-level calls from Livelink 8 OScript macros to external programs. However, Opentext provides a facility called "drop-ins" that the Livelink product developers use to extend the Livelink product. Some customers may have used drop-ins to communicate with external programs even though drop-ins are not a supported interface for customer enhancements.Try searching through this discussion for more threads on "drop-ins" or contact Opentext for more details as I have none. If I have got the facts wrong someone please speak up.Good luck!

Message from Stephen Klosky via eLinkThanks NIDAUser2.I looked into drop-ins and found that they will not be supported in the long run, so I really didn't want to go down that road.Livelink's answer seems to be to use the CORBA activator in order to call externally. Not only is that something new for me to learn, but they also want $10,000.00 for the module. That seems to be too many $$ just to run a program. (Gosh, I'm straining to be polite here . . .).Fortunately, they do provide socket support. So I am currently working on a workflow trigger that calls a CGI (via sockets) which in turn calls my COM based application services. This is certainly the long way around the barn . . .Thanks for your advise.Steve Klosky>>> development@elinkkc.opentext.com 09/21/00 13:50 PM >>>RE- Calling External Programs from BuilderPosted by NIDAUser2 on 09/21/2000 01:46 PMI'm a real Livelink newbie but since no one else has responded to your query I'll give you my 1/2 cent of knowledge:There is no direct support for COM or API-level calls from Livelink 8 OScript macros to external programs. (Gosh, I'm straining to> be polite here . . .)The Livelink Activator for CORBA does much more than "run a program". Itcontains an IDL compiler, an Interface Reporsitory, as well as other toolsthat provide the binding between your external program and Livelink. Inaddition, it is a fully supported and documented product. A great deal for$10,000 ;-) If you need more information, don't hesitate to contact me.Simone OettingerSimone OettingerProduct ManagerOpen Text CorporationTel (847) 267 9330 ext. 4224Fax (847) 267 9332simone@opentext.com
