Workflow Maps and Assignment Steps - Category / Attribute Values Population

If there are Categories attached to the workflow map, how does one get them to appear at each user step ( Assignment )so the user can add / edit values associated with the Attributes in the attached categories?I did not see any user interface associated with the workflow map object definition to do this.Also, where can I find some Java LAPI examples of how to do this.Can you please help !ThanksNiranjan
