Creating Versions for Custom Node Data

I have created a custom node data, and is able to store and update my custom data. However, I would also like to create a pseudo-version for this data. That is for any update made to this data, there will be a version stored in the system. I have difficulty getting this "version" function included. I am wondering if anybody has tried doing so?-Gordon
