Comparison of writing Java LAPI app to VB LAPI app

I am currently designing a polling application that will need to search a livelink repository, and send an email based on whether a document is found. I have two choices, write the application in VB 6 and run it on a Windows 2000 box using IIS, or write it in Java and run it on a Sun 450 using sendmail. The Livelink repository resides on the Sun 450 either way. Any opinions on which would be the better platform to use? My main concern is in the LAPI integration support for both languages. Another option is writing it in OScript with a custom agent and sending it with the e-mail server Livelink is using for its notifications.

Unfortunately, the application has to handle events outside of Livelink. It will be polling Livelink for documents, but it will also be polling other systems for certain events. I used Java LAPI to search the document's path, to create folders and add documents with attributes in my last project, I also used Java email class to notify user when the special event happens. There was no problem.
