Category & Attributes - working with User and Popup fields

I set up a category (using the GUI) which has several popup text fields and several user fields.Now I want to go into a document and set the atts. My program (in C) finds the category and lists the attributes with their data type. However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to read or set the attributes for these popup text fields and user fields correctly.
