Upgrading from 8.1.5 - 9.1

We have Livelink V 8.1.5 with server with desktop customisations and need to upgrade our system to run with Windows XP. I would appreciate hearing from people who are in a similar situation to see what their upgrade strategy is. Currently, our strategy is to upgrade the desktop to 9.0.22, then LL server to 9.1, and then upgrade the desktop again to Carbon.
