SLAPI Version 2!

Message from David Slimmon via eLinkGood morning!For all you SLAPI lovers out there, the charming and talented Paul Jensenhas put together a wonderful version 2 of his SLAPI tool to help makeeveryone's lives a whole lot easier.Static LAPI (SLAPI) version 2 can be downloaded at the following location:https://knowledge.opentext.com/knowledge/livelink.exe?func=ll&objId=2734728In addition to all the good stuff that the original SLAPI offered, version 2boasts the following features:1. Better support for Categories and Attributes. They're completelysupported in SLAPI. But with version 2, one is able to:* create new Categories* add new Attributes of any type (except Sets)* create default values (for most attribute types)* apply those Categories to Livelink objects* set attribute values on those Category applicationsSee CategoryTest.java to learn how to use SLAPI's Cats and Atts support.2. User and Group Management allows SLAPI programs to create and manageLivelink Users and Groups, and assign login privileges and objectpermissions to those Users and Groups. It's all done through theUserManager, so see UserManagerTest.java to how this stuff works.3. Java Swing's TreeNode interface has been implemented for the Node type,so it's really easy to make a little graphical Livelink browser in Java. RunTreeDemo.java to see an example. Thanks to Chris Meyer for this idea!4. A simple testing framework has been added. See CategoryTest.java,UserManagerTest.java, and TestMaster.java to learn more.In short, SLAPI is more experimental and fun than ever before! I have just downloaded and successfully tested the SLAPI V2.0 sample. It looks like a super tool with lots of potential!Has anyone extended the new test framework beyond the CategoryTest & UserManagerTest provided in the download?If not, I may try to develop more tester classes for Document, Folder, etc. BE VERY AFRAID ;-) My time spent on SLAPI is currently low-priority, keep busy work so I can't promise anything yet.Thanks,Paul H.

The SLAPI V2.0 User.Commit method has the GroupName parameter hard-coded to "DefaultGroup". Is there a specific problem that is being avoided? Why would the base group not be supported as an updatable field (like Title or Contact) in the User class?Thanks,Paul H.

The new user's default group certainly should beparameterized, and I agree that it looks a bit odd that it isn't,since I did parameterize perhaps less important fields such ascontact. I forget exactly why.SLAPI, for the most part, was built up in a gradual, ad-hoc way tohelp me get the task at hand done, and there are lots ofinconsistencies such as this one throughout. It's an easy tweak -- oneI may make someday to SLAPI unless someone sends me a patch first.Cheers,Paul

Thanks for the response Paul.I understand that SLAPI is a work in progress. I am very grateful that you have taken the time to put it up on the Knowledge Center for us. It is a tremendous improvement over the standard LAPI wrapping of procedural calls in an object oriented interface. I am about 2/3 done with an app based on SLAPI. I will plan to add a User.setDepartment method to cover this situation. And yes, it will be a production application. We will just do lots of testing and fix whatever comes up.I also noticed there does not seem to be any ability to update an existing user. I will also try to add support for updates. Which approach sounds better to you:o Modify the Commit method for updates, oro Add an Update method so Commit is only used for creating users.Once I have this tested I will upload my version of the User class in another post. Unfortunately, this is a low-priority project that I only get to work on when all my other assignments are in wait state. :-(Regards,Paul H.
