Version problem

Infosys_Infosys_(infosysuser1_-_(deleted))

I had made changes to the document node by modifying the webdoc_2_2_0 module and lliapi module.The livelink version that I am using is 9.1.0.2.54I exported this module to a Livelink version 9.1.0.1.28There livelink refused to work. It throws an error that this is a newer version and is not supported.How do I make it work?? Does that mean that whatever I make on the new version of livelink will not work on older versions???The system that has the older versions do not have a livelink builder on them. So I cannot modify there directly.Please help as this is rather urgent.

There are numerous ways of modifying the defaultbehaviour of Livelink without changing core code. Thanks for replying Chris...Let me try and explaing why I took the approach of modifying Livelink's core mdoule.There are certain functions associated with a document node like 'move', 'copy' etc. I wanted to add another custom function to the document, e.g let's call this function archive. When you select archive for a document it is supposed to move this document to a certain folder in Livelink.How could I achieve this functionality without modifying the core modules. By modifying the core modules I do not mean that I tweaked with the existing code. I just added a web node and an action command for this functionality.Now the problem is that I only know one approach of creating new modules. The other way that you suggested like patch the system, remap functions, remap weblingo, or override a registered item in a subsystem, I have no idea how to go abt it. Can you suggest some pointers or documentation where I can learn abt it.Now coming back to the version problem. Now the modified module that I have, if I want to use it on another machine I just copy the whole module and replace the existing module. But if the Livelink versions are different then it does not work. Is this not supported by Livelink at all or is there some workaround.I know you would have realized by know how desperate I am.Please reply if you can throw any light at all on this issue.Regards,AJ

It's quite similar to an object-based language, such as Java, inthe sense that you can extend classes and override particular methods (I'mnot comparing this to objects, but only how classes are defined). Buildingand extending a new 'class' (or 'leaf' in LL) in Livelink Builder is oftenreferred to as 'orphaning' (if you put it in a different ospace) or creatinga 'new child' (if you put it in the same ospace).Many (and most) of these functions include an __Init() function as the firstfunction of the leaf. This function is always executed on Livelink startup,which often registers the leaf with the a subsystem and is makes it aware tothe Livelink program. So take a look at, say, Webdoc :: DocNode and any ofthe child items of this leaf. Each leaf has an __Init() function whichregisters the leaf with the WebDoc subsystem. Or have a look at the__Init() function of Webdoc :: DocNodeCmd, and you'll see how commands areregistered with the WebDocCmd subsystem. The point is, the leaf thatrepresents your custom function does not need to exist in the same module asall the other functions. You can create your command in a custom modulewhich you can later install on multiple instances.So what you likely did was add new leafs to the WebDoc ospace by directlycreating a child of DocNodeAction and DocNodeCmd. However, it would makemore sense to create a new module and 'orphan' the DocNodeCmd andDocNodeAction leafs into it. From within your new module you can use the'New Child...' function on these orphaned leafs to make as many commands andwebactions as you please.I hope this helps you get started. Thanks Chris for taking out time for explaining things to me.You would definitely be aware of the shortcomings of the Livelink tutorial and the manuals.It certainly does not enable you to do some serious work on Livelink modification. How livelink is structured, how we can really harness the power of livelink, oscript's proper usage, there are so many things to know but are not mentioned in the manual.I believe that livelink has training programs. Can I get information on the schedules and the course fees etc. Also are they really useful to developers like me. I want a course which will focus on the technical nitty gritties of livelink development rather than the application part of Livelink.Now I am facing another roadblock.I messed up my last livelink installation.I have put up the following posting on the installation discussion as well.
