How can you modify a folder view to show and sort by an attribute, e.g. Document ID/No.?

We need to add Document ID/No. to all documents stored in various folders and we want both to show and to be able to sort the contents of such folders by this one document id. Document ID/No. can be entered as an Attribute. Any advice on how we can do this in a simple way and fast way?

Open Text PS has a module called Category view that is generic for changing display
