DS v.2.2.1 - One user can't use Livelink

I have a problem with one of my users not being able to connect to Livelink. He gets "Livelink Error" "Error processing request" "Could not get the Enterprise Workspace". We are using Livelink Directory Services 2.2.1 on Livelink 9.1 SP1. We are also using NTLM Authentication. This is a user in Livelink but he has been removed from Domain Users group in Active Directory because he is connecting from outside the Domain. If we put him back in the Domain Users group it works. why this problem when we are only using "NTLM Authentication (Username only). No synchronization.
