How to perform .NET calls against Livelink index and repository?

Can anyone point me to documentation on how to perform a VB.net call to the Livelink index and repository where document is searched, then fetched to the .Net website? We need to skip the Livelink workspace page altogether. I cannot find a document that describes this approach. Is there an exposed API or .NET service?We currently run 9.00.1 SP2 but will move to 9.2 soon.
