Propogate Changes in a Category ?

As far as I can tell , if you make a change to a category you have to go though the site manually to upgrade the catgories at every folder and project which uses this catgory. Surely this cannot be correct ?Can anyone recommend a way to do this easily ?Kevin

I believe it takes time as it goes iteratively through all items with that category. I believe it also has the effect of modifying the "last modified" date/time of each item that has that category attached, which may/may not be an issue for you.

How long the updates take depends on how many objects use that category.This is a long standing complaint that we have against Livelink and really exposes areas where the product does not scale for large sites.We have several catagories what have been applied to anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 items. Upgrades are now effectively impossible. The upgrade will step through the affected items (10 at a time) for literally days.There needs to be a better way.

I agree with you John. We have LOTS of categories and attributes and upgrading even one of them is painful. It can be done (we have even modified LL to do way more than 10 at a time) but we have to plan on spending at least a week to do it.Also, do you see this problem...if the upgrade is stopped for any reason (like maybe the LL service stops during that week) you can not restart it...if you try the counter that shows "X number of items upgraded" never moves off zero?

Well I started thinking that is was just me not understanding this category business, but now I see its a Hornet's nest. Hopefully Open Text will take note and improve the categories so that you don't need to be a teckie or SysAdmin to maintain them.Its all pretty scary stuff. - yet everyone agrees that a document system without good meta-data retrieval is next to useless.
