Ideas on RSS feeds in Livelink

Marcia_Gillespie-Norder_(tokeleadmin_-_(deleted))

Hi,Has anyone seen or written a function that will generate RSS feeds in Livelink?I played with this idea a few months ago. It seems that one could just create an XSLT stylesheet to convert Livelink's XML format to RSS, then issue the stylesheet parameter in XMLExport. However, I want to say I remember there being issues with the login. Typically, RSS feeds are not secure. In my case, we would want to publish the contents of a news channel or folder list as an RSS feed so that our engineers could subscribe. But, we don't really care to lock down the RSS feed. Could this just be marked as Public?Another alternative is simply to go around the Livelink UI altogether. I could create a JSP using LAPI with parameters back to the objects in question. But, this is not as nice as using the Livelink UI for my users.Does anyone have any opinion on this matter or wish to contribute any past experiences related to RSS or other related endeavors? Thanks much,Kevin HutsonTokyo Electron America

I think adding a non secure RSS feed to Livelink would be awesome. I sent an email asking Opentext to explore this for the KC because I would subscribe to it in my My Yahoo portal. In any case, along the lines of XMLExport and Login... What I have done a couple of times now is just cache the XMLExport outside of Livelink. Then a scheduled script will run a .vbs file (I am on NT) every 30 minutes to re-gen the export. The Exported file can then have whatever security you like on it. This model should work. And one other thing to mention.... In Livelink the Communities of Practice module, they have already created a RSS feed there of Blogs. Not the same thing but likely close to what you want.

Hello folks:Based on the discussion here, I've managed to create an RSS module in oscript. It is still in alpha-ish mode and not really ready for production deployment. If anyone is really desperate for this, please contact me: The module will be released under an open source license and I'm hoping to polish it before the beginning of the new year. It currently allows for non-authenticated access to news channels if they are marked publically readable. I'm not totally in favour of such a configuration, and I'm trying to think of alternative mechanisms that would be more secure by default. It generates an RSS 2.0 compliant feed.I shall publish any further updates here.MERRY CHRISTMAS!Rolf.

What is the problem with security.....If used internally in a company then maybe SSO would be good enough or am I lost .....RegardsMagnus Salgomagnus.salgo@swedemail.se

Where are the best information sources about RSS?? I have seen some book about RSS but havn't bought it What I have found so far Specshttp://blogspace.com/rss/specsGenerall RRS and readershttp://www.newarchitectmag.com/archives/2000/02/eisenzopf/http://www.webreference.com/authoring/languages/xml/rss/intro/http://www.pcworld.com/resource/article/0,aid,111699,00.asphttp://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,116018,pg,1,00.asp RSS feeds directorieshttp://www.newsisfree.com/http://www.topix.net/RegardsMagnus SalgoPs. the project I spoke about earlier there we will integrate Livelink inside MySAP portal by using XSL Stylesheets. It is not to sophisticated where you show one news channel in every Iviews in MySAP but it is an internal prototype and they have solved it this way for other information sources .,...I think it is the wrong approach but the customer is always ....

With Livelink, you need to authenticate before anything can be retrieved. With RSS, it is generally a client reader that doesn't always support authenticating - even with SSO. The client just wants one file that returns RSS - not a login screen. So - to accomplish this, you have to disable the login checks. One approach to this could be to create either a new permission or a new node type. The Permission would be a RSS Public permission - this way you don't disable logins unless teh bypass login permission is setup. A new node type would be the same thing - it would just be more deliberate so a user would be fully aware that this node type is Public. Not sure if this make any sense - it isn't thought out on my part - I am jsut thinking out loud....

Stephen:Great ideas....Here are some more, based on my alpha module that I built to RSS enable news channels:1. Firefox stores the cookies nicely, so the Live Bookmark feature will respond to the cookie request, and then the RSS feed is neatly available in the Live Bookmark dropdown. The caveat is that you must have logged in before to obtain a valid cookie.2. Another way to solve the permission problem, would be to make use of a "RSS" user - then the anonymous retrieval is made using that user's context if "Public See Contents" is enabled. That way, one would specifically grant access to that user for the channel (and items if applicable) to see them. I don't think that rendering the content as the Admin user if public see contents is enabled is a wise security design.3. SSO - this should altogether get around these problems due to NTLM/Kerberos working in the background to authenticate. This would work well in Intranet environments, but what about the knowledge site for example. Also, I don't know whether all RSS clients would support NTLM/Kerberos.I have implemented 1 & 2 successfully. I still need to add the finishing touches (settings via the admin page and so on).Regards,Rolf.

Magnus:Somehow overlooked this post of yours for some reason.XSL Stylesheets are ok to get things going, but the approach I've been following is to code it into oscript for the simple reason that it then becomes extensible to items that are perhaps not that simple to pull together into the same format. Also take a look at:http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rssfor the RSS 2.0 specRegards,Rolf.

How is your progres on the RSS module?

Is it allready production quality?

I would like to try this in our test environment.
