Running a request in background

I wrote a requesthandler which works fine except that it will sometimes time out on me when it's got a lot of data to process. Rather than increase the timeout limit on the webserver, I'd like to give the user a running update on the status of their request while it performs in the background, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. I've looked at the category upgrade and the database upgrade to see examples of how to do this, but I'm still lost. Anybody done anything along these lines?

In general you write progress information to the database in the first request and that data is retrieved by the second request you pass to browserbegone.

Category upgrade is not a good example, because it splits one request into several requests. Which is a bit different then what you want.
