How do we search on a custom multi-valued attribute using lapi

I need to search for document in a hierachy of Folders and sub-folders using a custom attribute which is defined in the documents. I've looked at the listobject function but the querystr parameter is not exactly clear on how to use custom attributes, if it does use it at allAny comments are appreciated
