Out of memory on large search

I've written a LAPI program in JAVA that searches a large number (several thousand) of documents/folders. For each one returned, some other processing is performed. If I set forHowMany on the ApplyQuery too high, I run out of memory when the resultset is built. Is there another way to search so that I don't run into this memory limitation?
