copy node with blank required fields in a workflow

I am attempting to copy a node into a folder with a categoryapplied to it within an item handler step, merging the categories of both thenode and the folder. Typically I don’t have problems, butwhen I make one of the category attributes in the folder applied, the copyfails with the message “[Attribute Name] is a required field.”Where [Attribute Name] is the name of the attribute I’ve made required inthe category. I know why this is happening – the failure to copyoccurs before I have a chance to populate the required category field (which Ido later). I have seen that there is an flag you can use for node copyingwhere you can specify that no categories should be copied (DAPI.COPY_NO_CAT)But I want to copy the categories, I just don’t want the required fieldto be applicable until after I do the copy. Anyway, I know this is a bitof a strange problem. Just to note in advance, it projectrequirements make it impossible to “not” make the attribute in thecategory required. So that easy fix is out the door.

Aaron,If you add the category and set the value before the copy is made, does that solve the problem? You could always remove the category after making the copy.How about copying the document to some staging folder, adding the category and the attribute value, then moving that copy to the final location?

Message from Aaron Gundel via eLinkHey Jeff, The problem actually seems to be that the folder I'm copying intoactually has the category applied to it. I set the categories to mergein the item handler step. If I populate default values in the categoryapplied to the folder first, copy succeeds. If there are no values inthis category prior to the copy, it fails. I attempted to use theDAPI.COPY_NO_CAT flag yesterday to do a copy into that folder withoutapplying the category, but I've had no success. I will try to use atemporary folder as you suggest and see if that helps.
