Department Mapping - Need help with LDAP

Currently we have our LDAP sync set to run nightly and it puts all users into a single group. However, we have exceeded the 1000 users per group setting (which we have temporarily overriden to compensate).Since my client does not have a clear departmental structure within AD to pull from I thought that we could format several LDAP strings to pull users based on first initial of their last name. We would then configure multiple syncronization profiles to put them in various groups. Example GROUP_A-F, GROUP_G-M etc.....Is their a way to format our current string to accomplish this task?(&(objectCategory=user)(!(objectClass=contact))(employeeID=*)(userAccountControl=512))
