Retrieving and setting Attributes in a running workflow

I am trying to get and set attribute values programmatically in a running workflow. In the trivial case, I just want to know the value of a text attribute. The code I have is as follows:

   List<ApplicationData> dataList =
    wfSvc.getWorkItemData(item.getProcessID(), item.getSubProcessID(), item.getID());
   
   for (ApplicationData data : dataList) {
    if (data instanceof AttributeData) {
     AttributeData aData = (AttributeData) data;
     AttributeGroupDefinition groupDef = aData.getAttributes();

The issue is that the AttributeData class is only able to give me the AttibuteGroupDefinition. What I of course want is the actual attribute values. I can see the values in the debugger but they must be protected properties. Any idea how to get to these values?

lol - I keep finding the answer 10 minutes after posting the question!

It turns out that I can cast the attributes to the actual type that they are and then get to the value that way. Like this:

   for (Attribute attr : groupDef.getAttributes()) {
      if (attr instanceof StringAttribute) {
       StringAttribute sAttr = (StringAttribute) attr;

       System.out.println("Attr: " + sAttr.getDisplayName()
        + " (" + sAttr.getValues().get(0) + ")");
      }
     }

I still think that an AttributeGroup would make most sense but this will work too!

Looks like I have further issues with ApplicationData... My first issue is that if I try to create the interfaces with MyEclipse WebService Wizard, everything seems to work but all ApplicationData that is returned using the service.getWorkItemData only returns the interface AttrbuteData, not the actual implementations AttributeData, CommentData and AttachmentData. But when I use the webservices jar file that came with the LLTreeView sample, everything works. I find this really weird since these are just interfaces pointing to the actual code on the server and should (in theory) not contain any code. Any ideas?

The second issue I have is that even using the provided jar file, I am not able to get to my comments. I loop through my ApplicationData list and correctly identify the CommentData. But there isn't anything there! I have chacked the workflow and the comments are in there. All other data (attachments and attributes) are correct. Could someone please try to verify if this is a bug or I am doing something wrong?! Here is my code...

Just as a follow-up, I resolved the first issue where the Java proxies didn't retrieve the information properly. The problem seems to be with the MyEclipse wizard that I used to generate the proxies. When I use wsimport on the command line to generate the code, the issue went away. I tried to check on MyEclipse's website to see if someone else has the same issue but was not able to find any useful info...

I have the simliar issue in .NET. I was trying to add attributes to a document when I add it to a folder with Livelink ECM EWS.

I can create the document very easily and attach a document to it, but I can not assign the values to the Metadata object.

Hi, Yun.

You can use the DocumentManagement service's getCategoryTemplate() method to retrieve an AttributeGroup array, which you can then add to the attributeGroups property of your Metadata object.

it works for the booloean attribute, but returns an 'object reference not set' error for the string.

I've searched for an example of setting string attributes but could not find any. Am I doing something wrong ?

Hi, Zakariah.

If there are no string values for that attribute, the array itself will be null. In that case, you can instantiate a new string array and assign it to the Values property of the StringAttribute instance.

Following on from this, we now have an itemreference attribute(folder), how can i set the value of this using simmiliar syntax below:

What 'typeof' attribute is an itemreference?

Hi, Zak.

In 9.7.1 ItemReference attributes are instances of IntegerAttribute. The values correspond to the DataIDs of the items.
