Pathing - limitation for new nodes?

I am trying to create a patch file for a new node. I added a sixth child to an existing node and want it to go into the patch file. The problem is the log reads "no object to update : skipping sub-patch". I hear that you cant add new nodes, just modify scripts and features of exisitng ones. Is that correct? or is there a better way than bundling up the entire OSpace?
