Hi,

I just took the builder class and need help in figuring out how to move forward!! I have a set of folders and I'd like my oscript to get the names of the folders and pass them as a string to a function that will create groups based on these names.

Any tips on how to get this going? I'd appreciate any help I can get - it is very confusing right now!!

It is better if you post with some examples of what you are looking for.

For eg -If I do List Objects on a folder id,the return values will conatin all the objects and using suitable node methods one should be able to get its name.node.pName is the object id name.ListObjects can be called by saying subtype=0 which is akin to saying select * from dtree where subtyep=0.Once you have that then you have to use UAPI functions,the previous ones were DAPI functions.On login your prgCtx contains a valid dapi session,wapisession and uapisession.If the oscript users has groups and users privileges in their login session(unless you are using Admin for login).If you search builder just like UAPI.CreateUser you will get a lot of examples that OT developers has done,look at how they are doing those and when you get stuck write and we will try to help.Mostly as devlopers one should look at the package called lliapi and use its methods.The low level methods sometimes can throw you off.Here's form the documentation of lliapi:userNew

And may I add to thisthat I like to start any project with an algorithm. In this case the firstthing you need to decide is what event will start the entire process. That is,if this is an end-user- or system admin-triggered event such as someoneselecting an item from a functions list, you will use a Request Handler. If itis to be part of some other operation, like the creation of a folder, then youwill probably use a WebNodeAction object and its execute method.

So, my advice is to decideon these factors first.

Thanks Appu and Howard. It makes it a little easier on me to know that I have somewhere to go to for all my questions :-).

I thought I had an algorithm all written out before I went into class but I don't know if its even possible to execute that anymore. This will be something that will be triggered both as a batch program (where the program goes into the root folder and gets back each and every sub-folder within) as well as on the creation of a folder by a process step within a workflow.

This is the gist of my problem: I have a root folder with multiple levels of sub folders. This could look something like:

Root

1a 1b

1a2 1a3 1b1

The groups should be : "Root -1a -1a2", "Root-1a-1a3", "Root-1b-1b1".

I had originally thought of writing a hierarchical query in Oracle to give me a list of all sub-folders under Root along with their path, and based on the length of the path, create a string that would be the group name.

Is this a viable option? Also - instead of a hierarchical query, if there is another way of doing this - what is it?

If you have therecommender module installed you will have the DTreeAncestor table and so coulduse it. Or as Appu says, recursively list the nodes in the root folder –depth first – (this would be my preferred way if the tree isn’t toodeep).

If it is to be a batchprogram (run by the sys admin?) I’d probably put a link on theAdministration page (see exercise 14 in the Builder course) and make it aRequest Handler (section 6 in the Builder course).

Other considerations:

Also you should look at the column size of the user & groups table.as your nesting starts really getting long you may have to modify this table and leave a note for other admins saying,that the column was modified.many times at upgrades OT puts upgrade code which will expect tables to have their own definition.It has happened to me before so I had to undo the changes,again change it back after the upgrade and so on.

Also it looks like this solution is to be used to address some access conditions.People of Group

Root-1a-1b has access to this folder named Root-1a-1b

So don't you want a mechanism to control when this code should not be fired.If you create code that alters folder creation.Suppose a user adds a folder called junk at that level,the code would make a group called Root-1a-1b-junk,that is probably not what you want so make sure to test that.A way I can think is a category with a flag for eg "CreateDynamicGroups" with checked.So when the user adds Junk,then your code should check to allow or disallow as it will be very easy at that point to get the node categories.Just a thought.

BTW-most of this can be done with lapi,webservices or OI as well..well OI may not allow you to do user/group creation,but you may be to extend that as well...

Good point about the ‘junk’.

May I also point out thatas LAPI will be eventually phased out, I’d recommend against starting anynew projects in LAPI.

Thanks for the response Howard. I did add a request handler to the admin.index pages and was able to run my query and get the list of groups. Works fine so far - but now I have one more snag - instead of running the query when I click the link in the admin.index pages, I want my program to bring up an html form which will allow me to enter some "select" parameters for my query (this was easy) - and when I submit the form, go to another page that takes these parameters, runs the query and gives me an output file.

What is the easiest way to go about this?

Have you looked at theForms module? It certainly has a lot of flexibility in creating the form aswell as getting the data off the form. It can store the data as a Livelinkdocument (what you are calling an output file) or as a row in an RDBMS table.
