Using Oracle RAC database

Hello,

We have trouble defining connection to Oracle RAC database for Shared Services (RCS & DS) 10.2.0 with Tomcat 6.

According to RCS installation guide it was required to simply specify server name, database name and user but for RAC there are two server names. So I assume that there must be some separate configuration file for that similar as it is for Enterprise Process Services and User Management Server.

Should we use Tomcat default datasource definition or are there some specific OT config files?

We tried editing boot.properties under <tomcat home>\lib\ but couldn't get correct JDBC string working as it seems that some chars should be escaped.

Hi Ugis. RCS' support for Oracle RAC is different than Enterprise Process Services'. RCS assumes the RAC is behind an Oracle service, whose name you enter at installiation. See section 2.2, step 9c, of the Runtime and Core Services Installation Guide. This is different from RCS 10.1.0, which accepted a System ID (SID).

This name does end up at the end of the Connect string in <tomcat home>\lib\boot.properties, eg:

rcs.config.Connect=jdbc\:oracle\:thin\:@//hostname\:1521/serviceName

but in general the Connect string should not be edited after the first RCS startup. The same applies to the boot.db.properties file in the RCS workspace (filestore), which holds the RCS database information for RCS horizontal cluster installations on additional machines, used in RCS 10.2.1.

Also, RCS doesn't use Tomcat data sources.

I think of RCS' RAC support as server-side, where RCS never sees the multiple Oracle database instances on possibly multiple physical servers, and EPS' as more client-side with failover, etc.

Hello Sergio,

During installation we did specify Oracle Service Name and Oracle server (e.g. node1).

While Oracle is running on node1 everything is fine until it fails over to node2. Seems that the connection is lost at that point. Also if Tomcat is restarted all ot* and otds* webapps fail to start as there isn't connection to DB.

In this scenario the server name is frustrating for me as we can only specify 1 server but in RAC there are 2 nodes. Should there be some virtual address which "knows" whice Oracle nodes are running? Are there any other options?

Hi Ugis. I see what you mean about the server name. We tested on a RAC with multiple database instances behind the service name but on the same server. I'm not sure offhand if you can enter some kind of virtual or load balancer address for the server name.

Since RCS RAC support is different from EPS', probably the best thing is to use a different database server for RCS, with either a single database instance or multiple instances accessible via one service name.

However, if that goes down you may still run into reconnection problems. The upcoming RCS 10.2.1 has database reconnection capabilities but not RCS 10.2.0 .

As per Runtime and Core Services 10.2.1 Release Notes, it says patch 003 onwards RAC is supported. I have added the patch. As we cannot edit the existing connection under Data Access Layer, I tried creating a new connection using the Virtual Name of RAC. It was throwing an IO error and unable to create the connection.

Can someone assist me to create a new connection

the RCS installation guide mentions Oracle RAC athttps://knowledge.opentext.com/knowledge/piroot/elcs/v100201/elcs-igd/en/html/instcoreserv.htm. I‘m not sure if this helps in your situation. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, please contact OpenText Customer Support.
