How can I programatically open a Document in Edit mode

Hello,

I am using the following services:

...Authentication.svc and DocumentManagement.svc

I am able to create (upload) small documents, but I don't know how can I retrieve then in edit mode

or in read only mode. I can only download them.

Can you please advice?

Hi Alex,

There is no functionality provided by the web services that allows you to retrieve a document in any such modes. You are only able to just download them like you said. Once you have downloaded a document you can create your own interface to display the contents of the document (editable or not) and if you want to save any changes you would have to just upload the document again (add a version) with the new contents.

I would like to open the document (I need this only for docs files) reserve it, and after editing, when I press save, it should be saved directly to opentext CS (without chosing again the folder /or specify that it's a new version or use any additional user dialog)

If this is not possible, I've seen also that every item has an WebDAV URL (and an WebDAV Long URL, too)

Would it be appropriate to use this? If so, how can I retrieve this WebDAV URL for the newly created document (node)?

Hi Scott,

I've seen that in OpenText Content Server each uploaded Office Document has 3 options:

Edit | Open | Download

I was wondering if all these 3 options are accessible through any of the OpenText services

Hi Alex,

You should be able to do what you want using the web services. It would take some work to create the interface though. At a high level you would first have to (1) reserve the document for the user, (2) download it, (3) use the downloaded document to create the editable interface, (4) save any changes by adding a version to the document, (4) and finally unreserve the document. From an end-user perspective they would not need to know about what exactly is happening in the background but they would just see the interface that lets them edit/save the document.

As for WebDAV, I don't have any experience using this so I'm not sure what it is capable of.

If you do it the other way around there is a slight chance that somebody will get the copy before you reserve it or even reserve it before you J

Thank you all for your answers.

The problem is that I am migrating from SharePoint to OpenText and I have to provide same functionality without any additional interfaces. So, if I download the document, save it locally, then I would have to overide the save functionality (in case let's say, isOTSaved, I have to add new version and unserve)

Yes, this could work.

in the meanwhile, I have discoverd that there is an URL that points to the document, and will always point to it even if it has been moved or renamed cause it contains the node Id ( 4950536):

example: http://my-test-otcs.com/otcsdav/nodes/4950536

If I use this, then it automatically lockes the document with overwrite protection. and I don't have to overwrite anything more in my application. It simply saves it to its place (automatically creates new version)
