How to enable/disable category inheritance

Rune_Kristiansen

Hello,

I am trying to figure out how to work with content web services and I am slowly making some progress. However, I am unable to find any support for enabling/disabling the category inheritance for a node. Where do I find the property/method to do this?

Thanks

Rune

Hello,

Thanks

Rune

Hi Rune,

I spoke with Jason Smith and he informed me that there's no way to enable/disable category inheritance with web services as you would in the GUI.

"I guess the default is that items will automatically inherit categories. A number of the CWS methods in the Document Management service take in a Metadata object as an input parameter. If this is left null it will inherit the parent's category (as long as inheritance has not been disabled in the GUI). Otherwise, I think you can just pass in an instance of Metadata object with no categories defined if you don't want to apply any categories."

Cheers,
Kyle

Hi,

Thanks for the answer. I am now back on the project working with web services. Our need to convert existing applications from lapi til web services is growing ever stronger as we have upgraded to CS10. Are there any progress on this situation? There are many scenarios in our production that demand disabling category inheritance on folders. If not possible through services, is there any other way of programatically doing this?

Regards,

Rune

I've added a feature request to add the ability to disable or enable category inheritance under LESAPI-1355.

I will post a reply back here to update you on when this will be released.

JSmith--

Thanks for letting us know that there's a feature request for this particular item. I've had to write my own services in OScript to then wrap some of these additional features that are not implemented in the current web services versions.

Any chance of getting/publishing a feature deployment list for the next versions of Content Server? There is not a product roadmap page/list for CS web services (something you all should definitely start doing). It would help us make decisions around extending vs. waiting when we find limitations.

I agree on that.

Do you think, by any chance, that you could post this code (without any support nor responsability, this goes without saying)?

For the sake of closure, the ability to get, set and view category inheritance will be available in the upcoming 2015-09 update for both CS 10 and 10.5.

Freddy Yeung

Good to know the next patch will have this feature. How about updating Category that apply to all sub-items? You "set" the category to be inheritted from the parent however when you update the category on Parent you still need to update each sub-items by calling the UpdateNode per sub-item?

Kyle_Swidrovich

Freddy,

The ability to push category information down to sub-items is not available in Content Web Services.
(I don't think it was possible in LAPI either...)

We have the 2015-12 update, which should have this. Is there any documentation on how to do this? I can't see anything in the online API documentation.

The issue I have is I want to create a document which inherits category information (i.e. setting Metadata = null on CreateDocumentContext). However, when I do so, I get a 'required field' error as the parents category contains 'mandatory' fields with no set value. And by providing a metadata object with the required values, I no longer get inheritance.

Hi Nathan, which version of 2015-12 is your CS? 10.5 or 10.0.0?

In the documentation for document management webservices, do you see anything for 'CategoryInheritance'? It's a new SDO that was added which is used by the Document Management's 'GetCategoryInheritance' and 'SetCategoryInheritance' methods.

As for your second issue (for inheriting category info when providing a metadata object with required values), a new feature was added to the Metadata SDO called 'CategoryOptions'. Look in your documentation and see if you can locate the 'GetCategoryOptions' and 'SetCategoryOptions' methods on the Metadata SDO.

We have CS 10.5, however looking at the file-date stamps, it appears the administrator didn't update the CWS web-services that were in the 2015-12 patch. So that explains why I missed it. Thanks for your reply.
