Search for attribute values

Is it possible to search for an attribute value using the Search API?

I've read the API doc, and it appears the answer is "No". However, a forum search suggested that it may be possible if I use the TemplateID= parameter. Another forum search indicated that Search Region names could be specified using where1=(Attr_5085_3:"my text"). Can anyone provide details on this?

Hi Mark,

It is possible using the Attr_####_# syntax.

Once an object is indexed that has a category applied to it, each attribute in that category will become a searchable region.

You can see the list of category regions from the Search Manager’s “Regions” page in the Enterprise Data Source Folder of the System Volume in Content Server.

Another way to get the list is to look at the CatRegionMap database table.

This table stores the mappings between region name (e.g., Attr_1234_1) and display name (e.g., Category Cars : Model).

I’m not immediately sure if there is an API call to dump the entire region list…

The Content Server 10.0 Search API has two methods for retrieving the region list. Both contain the category attribute regions.

?func=search.getregioninfo -- returns a flat list

?func=search.getregions -- returns the regions segmented by their attributes: queryable, searchable, search by default, sortable.

I got it finally. Thanks. The part I was missing is the double-quotes around the region name.

It would be helpful to put this whereX=("SEARCH_REGION_NAME":"VALUE") syntax in the next version of the Search API docs. It's very useful for Attributes and for "Search From Here" (e.g. where2=("OTLocation":6853)). Even more helpful -- a more straight-forward means of doing attributes would be nice. While you're at it, add an OTLocatoionX= parameter (that includes a 'Here' value so you don't have to figure out where here is). [Users are never satisfied. :P]

One last, related question, I want to do a "Search from here". I plan on using the whereX=("OTLocation":DataID) format. Is there an easy way to determine what the current DataID is, e.g. in a Javascript variable? Alternatively, would the Nickname work instead of the DataID?

Whoops, let me clarify. I'm writing a CustomView that includes a custom search interface. Is there a quick way to get the current ObjID from the page javascipt. I know I can parse it out of the URL; but if there's a better way, I'd like to use it. I'm using the the ObjId to do a "Search From Here" using ("OTLocation":OBJID).

The Search API 10 documentation is currently in the pipeline.

The difficulty with providing a “Here” parameter is that there’s no guarantee that you are actually “somewhere” when you use a ?func=search URL.

So I don’t think providing one in the API itself is the most appropriate place for such a feature.

If you are building one of these Search API URLs for use in a custom view, for example, then you could use Javascript to glean the DataID from the container you’re in (e.g., from the &objID parameter in the URL or via web lingo customization).

Users using appearances often do this, as outlined in this KBA:

Alternately, in CS 10, custom views have a capability to handle Javascript replacement tags – one of which exposes the DataID of the current container.

Check out the User Help section called “Customizing Content Server” -> “Working with Javascript Functions for Custom Views and Appearances” -> “To Add a Javascript Function to a Custom View or Global Appearance”.

In particular, you’d be interested in the <ot:OTvar_node_ID/> replacement variable.

wonderful input-thanks was very-very helpful!

I have used your advise and got my results, via:?func=search&where1=("OTSubType":"0" AND "OTName":"Call ID 123456")

but would like to browse to the folder, rather than just displaying the results.

Is that possible by incorporating the objAction=browse in the search URL?

I have looked in the Search APi and "SearchResultsFunctionMenu"section, but could nto figure it out.

Do we need to write a javascript for this?

Hi Maria,

Newer update levels of Content Server have an OTParentID region stored in the index for each object.

If you retrieve this region value, you can then use that value to browse to the container the object lives in.

For most containers, making a short link URL like /cs.exe/open/<containerID> would work.
