Objects manipulation in Builder

Hello,

I'm new at working with the Content Server Builder, and I'm trying to figure it out what i can do with it. I want to know if using sdk it is possible to:

1. When I create a category, to have some fields already filled in and to be read-only to not allow the user to change that value

2. When I create a document to fill the name of the document with a number auto-generated, basically if we can access the events related to a document

For the actions above do I need to create a custom module, or there is another way?

Welcome to the wonderful world of OpenText Builder, I know you’ll love it once you get started. I would encourage you to take the Builder training course to see exactly what it can and can’t do. But I’ll try to answer your questions here.

<![if !supportLists]>1) <![endif]>Defaulting an attribute in a category for any category use seems to defeat the purpose of it. That is, you want your users to be able to change attribute values in certain conditions so their searching returns meaningful results later on. What you might want to do is create your Category and then at certain folder levels you can set default values for attributes so any new contents in those folders inherit the default values. Unfortunately you cannot make these read-only, but in my experience users will only change what they are forced to change and so may just leave these alone. If this isn’t suitable you could create a workflow to assign default attributes.

<![if !supportLists]>2) <![endif]>Depending on what your needs you may be able to use the nodeID number that is automatically assigned to each document as it is entered into the system. If you look at a document’s properties > general page you’ll see its nickname, this is its nodeID. Now you can access the document by its nickname. Does that solve your issue? If not, then you will definitely want to look at the Builder as you have full control over all aspects of documents.

I will echo what Howard said here hardcoding a business value is really not useful,Perhaps if you want all objects to have the same thing you might consider using a classification for that.There is yet another way to do this but i would incur the wrath of a lot of people so I will clue it on(ANA) not a very good idea and no returning back after it is done.

The numbering scheme is doable by buying the OT module ADN.I coded that req using a sequence in oracle because the client could not justify buying that module.Certainly it can be done with builder.

If you ever think of changing OT core code please take training and please do put your changes in your owm module.

If a user creates a document and associate a category to it, I would like to know if it is possible to:
1. Have fields that the user cannot change, this is essential.
2. Validating the fields, for example if I would have a field date I would like to allow only the actual date and not past or future dates.
3. Associate the username of the user that is logged in to a field, I know that the field owner exists, but it is never update if some other user make changes to that document.
In regard to the auto-generated number of a document, I do not have the ADN module, and the nickname of a document is not sufficient to what I want because the number that I wanted has some business rules and for that reason cannot be the nickname.

There are objects in the SDK that I can orphan to do the functionalities that I want? Can you point me any documentation that I can look for the events associated to document creation or object creation.

As Howard said, I would recommend you to get a one week Builder training to startup. Then take one month practicing to discover the framework.

Finaly, according to these features request, I would evaluate 3 months for you to implement...and 1 year for debuging :=)

At this time a newer version of Content Server could be available, that partialy implements your features, and you may have to start all over again.

But seriously Ricardo, Pierre is right, a small amount of time invested now will pay huge dividends later on. And Pierre’s comment about everything being possible in Builder is what makes it both simple and complex at the same time.

I don’t think we hold any Builder training in Portugal, but certainly in other parts of Europe. And it just so happens that I will be in Portugal in 2013 if you can wait that long J but I suppose you want to get right to this. Please see this link

Both Pierre and Howard are right in that it will take a lot of time for an untrained,inexperienced person in livelink to write good oscript code in a short amount of time. However I have one or 2 suggestions for you if it suits you.

1)explore the possibility of coding this requirement with EWS(Enterprise Web Services) or LAPI.In this case the native livelink is used as a repository for objects and you cannot prevent a power livelink user from editing /manipulating objects that you carefully put there thru your interface.You would still be able to put restrictive permissions and prevent damage,use auditing to threaten such users not heeding your advice and what not.It will not be as elegant a solution as in oscript.

2)Explore the ELS route.ELS allows stands for Enterprise Library Service and in short stands for containers and documents you create.By design ELS does not allow a lot of manipulation in the livelink gui.You program in ELS by calling the respective webservices.A livelink server becomes ELS capable if you install the elservice and elsearch modules.ELS's web service proxies are loaded to your program by calling the WSDL which is running on a Tomcat server which has the product Run Time & Core Services installed.I just spent about 3 yrs on a ELS project and coded a little bit and know its capabilities.ELS errors are extremely poor so you might need builder to understand what errors mean .I was able to advice my project only because I knew builder.

In both of the above implementations you are bypassing the webui of livelink so you are designing it ground up so there is ample scope and modern languages to help acheive your end goal.

If you go the builder route a experienced oscripter may be able to shrink your dev time or if you burn the midnight oil you may be able to do that.

If you need more help on any of the above please don't hesitate

Hello,

First of all thanks for the replies.

I understand that taking the course is the best way to address this issue, but at this moment its not possible (maybe in the future).

From what I have been investigating of builder, to achieve this kind of functionality I need to orphan some objects and overwrite the necessary methods. Understanding when each object/methods seems to be complicated, can you point some documentation that might help me understand better the cs objects.

From the Help menu in the Builder, select Builder Help Topics. Start by reading the Livelink Builder Developer’s Guide followed by the Livelink Module Developer’s Guide. Don’t attempt the Address Book tutorial as it has not been updated lately. I’ve asked for it to be updated. The OScript Language Reference and OScript Built-in Package Index should be used as references.

One word of caution. Never unlock any of the OSpaces that ship with the Builder.

Yeah Howard ! I mean, now I have implemented that nifty attribute control using jquery and validate.

Just patched 22 templates, everything is working fine and that guy Pierre is sooo dumb.

3 months later it happens that users discovered that webdav module was not installed and this is sooo cool to drag&drop. hehe.
Come on buy a pack of Redbull and get into webdav reverse engineering now. I promise a lot of fun.
6 months later the business decides to go for Enterprise Connect. Never mind, just get a supervitaminated Guronzan cocktail and write a jquery to C# translator !

Sure they do, and I do too !
Of course I'm kidding, but I just want to point out that there's not an implicit simple answer to a simple request.
Particularly with oscript where you could imagine that callbacks take the place of eventing and orphans the place of inheritance, before you finaly understand that you have to "unlearn" OOP before you realy get into it.
For example the "have non modifyable attributes" simple request does not have a simple answer.
In classic OOP this could be related to "adding a behavior to the attribute object", which could simply be managed with a Decorator pattern.
In OScript things are a bit different I would say :=)

Most of it does still work (I was using CS10) and I learnt a lot, though I'm not sure whether it would still be considered best practice.

This approach has the benefit of minimizing your customization footprint (that is the number of parts of LL you are overriding). In my experience, messing with the GUI should be avoided as these are the types of changes that will not survive an upgrade (i.e. when your client upgrades from say Livelink 9.7.0 to Content Server 10).

Others here can scrutinize this approach.

There is actually a separate workflow for that. The idea is that only doc controllers should be messing with document versions, but someone who has the change authored should be able to initiate a WF to put it through the approval process. At the end, an event script adds the attachment added by the initiator as a DAPIVersion.

Complicated I know, but this is what I inherited.
