Upgrade Category Via Web Services

Hello,

Is there a way to upgrade a category on a node or nodes through the Content Web Services for CS10? I see three possible methods, but none seem to be what I'm looking for:

UpdateCategory - Seems to change the category definition, not the category on a node
UpgradeCategoryItems - Not sure what this does
UpgradeCategoryItemsContext - Method signature looks to try to upgrade everything. Also unsure why I would have to pass the version number

I think what I'm really looking for is a Node.UpgradeCategory() type method

I think the only way to update a category on a node is via the DocumentManagement.UpdateNode() method. So you would need to set the new category values in the Node's Metadata field and then do the Node update.

Yes I’ve succesfully created a .NET app that takes a category name and version and performs an upgrade on all items which refers to the category.

You need to use ChunkedOperationContext and then the DocumentManagementClient.UpgradeCategoryItems. There isn’t too much code to write to have it to work. The only thing I had to worry about is authentication timing out – I resolved that with a simple timer that re-authenticates before the timeout occurs. We’re actually running an upgrade as we speak on 300,000 docs.

If the upgraded category has a new attribute item deleted or added and if a new attribute has a required field wouldn't you need to

supply the receiving node a value to get the upgrade working?Many times Containers take less code to write but versionable items do take some design time.

Yes, that’s true. I should have specified. In order to be able to more easily upgrade we ensure that the new attributes aren’t required attributes. I was answering the question: “Has anyone successfully done it”. It sounded like folks on the thread were looking at the Node object to upgrade the category where it’s actually sitting at the DocumentManagementClient level.

Good point though, my post assumes a straightforward upgrade.

I tested with the API as you said,posting it in case the other person is looking for a snippet

DocumentManagement.ChunkedOperationContext blick = new DocumentManagement.ChunkedOperationContext();

//so that livelink can do it in a timely fashion.In this case 2138266 is a category that went from version 1 to 2.

When I tested my folder got the upgrade and the document skipped it.I worked around by making my livelink server not needing the required attribute for document subtypes. Well that is a workaround which will defeat the mandatoriness of the design...

So OOB you are basically with many work arounds

1)Create the new version of the category and put a value for all required things(I did not test this my guess is it will overwrite or merge existing)

2)Or make the livelink server forget that documents(versionable subtypes) do not obey mandatoriness.(very bad idea)

3)Perhaps just use UpdateNode with a right metadata template(I did not test this either)

When I look at LAPI it had a call called UpgradeObjectCategory(OBJID of Node,CATID of category,CatVersion,UpgradeInfo) which would have been a more elegant way of doing this.Perhaps there is a wsdl method equivalent to that?
