Custom Agent not executing on Scheduled times

Hello,

I have created one Custom agent. This agent is registered successfully in the AgentSchedule table also. I can run the agent using

http://<<SERVER NAME>>/<<INSTANCE>>/livelink.exe?func=agent.runagent&agent_list={'XXXX'}.

But the agent is not executing on the scheduled timings.

Can anybody point me out what may be the possible causes for this and how I can solve this issue.

Hans Stoop

You may want to check in the database what is specified as the next time to run. If it is too much of, it will not run.

Otherwise you need to debug the agent dispatching to see why your agent is not included.

I have checked the Agentschedule table, though the agent is listed in it and also showing Enabled as 1, the NextTime value is not getting updated. Once I run it from my browser, then only the NextTime and the LastTime value is getting updated.

Check the loader line if ur code is on

One machine and that machine do not

Allow agents to spawn you will have a problem

Your instance1 see this line

That means under normal circumstances when the livelink services are running allow agentids configured on "this" machine to run if "enabled"

Now enabled it gets form the database agentschedule line and if the agentid located a few lines above like [scheduleactivity] you will see 9999=1 and so on a 1 means yeah go run that when it is time.Your agentid may also show up I don't remember

you should also have a enableagents setting upward but normally all those settings are correct when you install livelink and you do not have to mess with that.

The RH that you posted works because this box has runwithoutlogin=true enabled.

In normal circumstances a agentid should not be enabled on many boxes because they may reach into the database at the exact time and lock up the whole system ,so usually people reserve one server to run agents and leave all the others like this

also make sure your agentid is really high in the 15000 range so even if there are bugs in your agents the OT agents will still run.

So it means the agent ID also must be present in the [scheduledactivity] section with a value 1., then only the agent can run?

Not really.The agentid=1 or 0 in the scheduleactivity is to only control the behaviour like this.

Assume I have 2 servers with the loader line and agents line enabled.

Assume it is 10.01 a and the agent controller starts exactly at the same time on both the boxes.Assume agentid 15000 is to be run.

It uses this logic.Box 1 and Box 2 logic almost exactly at the same time and instant...

Is 15000 to be run ? yes

Is it locally disabled /enabled ? yes (meaning "not a undefined " value).If so abide by what organization wanted it to do.

Is it not there in this INI file in scheduleactivity ("getting undefined from check")? yes go ahead and add it to the run list

So both box 1 and box 2 will try to run this agent.To prevent this race condition if we put on box1 15000=1 and on box 2 15000=0 then the logic works in our favor.

Your development methodology on agents looks very complicated to me and it does not have to be like that.

I would probably do agent development like this

On my laptop Make sure that OT agents are running

I create my module and without writing a single piece of extra oscript just a simple echo statement.

I schedule it thru weblingo or database stuff.

I make sure my custom agent executes fine and comes out thru.Note I have not had to mess with [scheduleactivity] etc here.

I write my real code.Test it so that it does not kill the ot agents..I usually also create the meat of the agent code as a util object so I will get the liberty of running it as a regular RH when developing.

I move it to my livelink org making sure to tell them that put it on a server that is running the ot agents(loader line full).If the org is really big and splits agents on several different servers then I would deploy it with the scheduleactivity flags,which means that on any one server it has to be 1 and all others 0.Most small orgs will run agents on their admin server and many people so mistakenly think agent running has to do with some admin services as well :)Usually a interview qn for a livelink admin.

You will see the above logic I put in this

AFAI think your scheduling subsystem is all broke Perhaps you can instill some order

into your system or get ot support to get all in order and try your "agent".

Actually I have checked that there are few default agents like Consumer five Mins Agents, Midnight Event processor, etc are also not working. Though they are showing enabled in the amin.index page but they havent been exceuted on the scheduled times and for quite a while now (about 2 months)

But there are agents which are running normally like we have rendition agent which is getting executed on scheduled times.

I am a bit confused that if the AgentSubsystem is messed up, it should effect every agent but not few selected agents, please correct me if i am wrong here.

can you share a screencap of the logs directory?In fact all I am looking for is evidence of your rendition agent on its own thread.Does the ini file have section somewhat alike this

Have you put debug=2 and wantlogs=true on this instance and see if you have a trace101 or trace102 or trace103 getting created that would tell me what all is wrong with thi system.

I suspect that one of the agentid's are crashing so it is preventing the controller from putting the next time in the database.

Hi Appu,

My agent is running now. Actually there was an issue with a different agent that is crashing the thread in the middle.

But now the agent is running on every run of the agentcontroller but not on the scheduled times in the agent schedule table. As i have told earlier that the agentschedule table is getting updated as I update the schedules and aslo the nextrun time is getting updated automatically.

What can be the issue here?

Take a look at this accompanying document for what its worth see if you can understand the scheduling logic.You have to understand it as many get confused on this aspect.

For starters make your agent run on any one server do not cluster it.Then make sure you see in its running agent101.out your agentid's execute and its end make sure you see all the other agentid's and make sure the agentid's that were run got the next time recorded correctly.

Secondly to rule out your agaent's mask make sure you take a good running agent's mask and update the agentschedule and see if now it runs according as scheduled now you know that it was your mask that was the problem.

If the pre-requisites to agent running are fulfiled it will rarely misbehave it is either faulty code by developers or users's expectations that go awry most of the time.

The found out the error that is occuring in a separate agent, which is causing the thread to break and because of this my agent is also not running. I have corrected the section of the other agent casuing the error. Now my agent also running on scheduled times.
