Modules that install categories, reports, columns, etc.

We developed a module that uses certain categories. At present, these categories are added via an XML import process, something completely separate from the module's installation process. We would like to standardize the installation process, having the module installation process--or a special admin page similar to the Recycle Bin page where it installs the data structures needed--install the categories, the facets, the columns, the reports that we need.

Is there a recommended process for doing this type of custom installation? XML imports? DAPI/CAPI calls?
Does anyone else have experience with this approach/need? What's been your experience?

Unless i am wrong, the Configure RH has a script called DoCustomStep() ..You can embed OScript here to install categories or other livelink items during a module installation. You may find more information on the builder documentation @: Modules developers guide / Adding DB Schema to Livelink.
