How to customize and add edit checks to the category/attribute page?

I would like to add some edit/validation checks to the existing category/attribute page, so that when end users need to update an attribute value, I want to be able to validate the value either throught javascript or some other method.

Any advise on how best to approach this would be great.

Hello,

My first thought is to create custom attribute. In this case you can make your own input UI as well control the data users insert (run javascript, ajax calls, validate against database etc.).
