Web Service for moving documents in Content Server times out

I am a newbie to development with web services. I have been trying to use the DocumentManagement webservice to move a few folders in Content Server. Even though the size of the folders is not huge, the code just goes on and on until it times out. I tried to increase the time out settings but no use. It just goes on for a longer period before it times out. Any thoughts?

Typically this would require your livelink team to understand their setup slowness can be caused by many many things in livelink so here are a few things I would check.

Bad Permission allottment.To test that use a webservices user account who has 'SA" on privileges.If this proves to be faster then the webservices user in the other test is being made to work through several problematic permission sets.
Too many modules that have custom call back code or interested in knowing about the "MOVE" event.You would certanly need to be a oscripter or employ ot to find this out
Bad dtreeancestors code and you are not on the latest and greatest code for recomender module.

None of what I said should be used to look at this rather take a deep breath and attempt the same procedure using the GUI.Websvcs code is nothing but the user activity done by a programming language.Typically webservices code will be faster as it does not have to present html.If you are alaready thread starved for livelink then webservices won't be any faster.

Hi Appu,

I'm interested in your comments re latest and greatest recommender. We're seeing some issues at a database level with recommender on Update 6 (long running queries etc.) but the Update 7 release notes don't mention anything about recommender performance. A KB search did find some old references to issues in this area but this was pre-CS.

I have never seriously worked in CS10 so its internals are really unknown to me.So I sure should stay away from generalizing like this.Unforunately many times I do not think clearly before posting.The slowness that occurs could be completely due to different reasons.

In old livelink some many many years ago I debugged recommender code and found some really bad slowness,It still lingers in my head.Recommender has since been fixed tremendously well.

Look at the speed of dtreeancestors when you write queries nowadays.I rarely use connect by now in any of my work.

I was only aware of a performance problem that was resolved in CS 10 Update 5(?) tied to a delete statement against a recommender table.

I’m not aware of anything since then, however, OpenText Customer Support is always available to help look into it with you.
