Working with CWS - Webinar - Nov 29th

I'll be hosting a webinar on November 29th at 11am EST to go over some examples of working with CWS. Some areas I'll be covering are: uploading files, downloading files, and working with categories and attributes.

My webinar tomorrow will focus on using the API and specifically in a .Net environment. And yes, I am basing everything on CS 10 but most of the concepts are the same in 9.7.1.

I'll see how this one goes tomorrow and if people are interested I can try to plan more webinars in the future to cover additional topics.

Taavi Ilves:Do I understand correctly that this "les-service" is something that is given by CS WS, it has all the API shown before in documentation.

YES.

"les-services" is the application name of CWS.

If you look under OTHOME/webservices/dotnet you will find the les-services folder to point to when setting up the application in IIS.

If you look under OTHOME/webservices/java/webapps you will find the les-services.war file to deploy in tomcat.

Taavi Ilves:and this les-service should be deployed independently

YES.

This webinar didn't cover the server configuration for setting up CWS, but this is explained in the installation guide found in the CWS documentation.

Pierre:This webinar is about using the webservice (and not creating your own), correct.

This isn't my area of expertise. There have been many posts to the forum around this topic, or feel free to start up a new one if you need more help with this.

In short, when using OTDS you use the OTDS authentication service and pass in the OTDS ticket in the OTAuthentication object the same way we used the authentication token from the CWS Authentication service.

Laszlo:Would you recommend to use the Opentext native webservices, or those from the CMIS connector, based on Oasis?

I would definitely recommend using CWS directly. However, I'm not overly familiar with the CMIS connector.

Wilson Cheng:So if we a file size that is more than 2GB(I know its rare), do we need to do anything special to allow it?

From a client perspective, to allow downloading files larger than 2 GB you just have to increase the maxRecievedMessageSize property on the ContentService binding.

However, you are also limited by the server configuration. You will have to make sure the application server (i.e. IIS or Tomcat) is configured to allow this as well.

Taavi Ilves:And this downloadStream may be memory too?

YES.

The downloadStream can be any type of stream you wish to use.

Okey:Is it possible to open teh document without downloading it

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by opening the document without downloading it.

SS:We are running Livelink 9.7.1, and noticed that ContentService is missing in our environment. This is a new service for CS10, is it correct?

NO.

The ContentService is not new. It should be there in your 9.7.1 environment.

Pierre:When working in a Load Balance environment, anything special to check for ?

From a client perspective, no.

However, the services will have to be configured correctly on the server to work in a load balanced environment.

Danai Sae-Han:What is the default timeout before an exception is thrown? Why is it an absolute time deadline instead of checking whether the upload/download has not *changed* since X seconds?

The default send timeout is 1 minute. I can't answer why this is absolute vs changed since. That is just the way it is. You can read more about using a WCF client on MSDN to get a better understanding of how it works.

Again, I'm not sure what you mean here. How can you view a document without downloading the contents? I see how this makes sense outside of the context of an API (for example, in a browser) but not for an API.

Taavi Ilves:I was referring not to download into filesystem, but directly to memory. And this question is for uploading too.. I have a file in memory not on disk, can I upload it with CS WS?

YES.

You can use different types of Stream objects for uploading/downloading.

Ruud Bax:Is it wise to open and close a client in every method or would it be better to do it only in the beginning and the end of the program ?

For simple applications you only need to create/open each client once and then close each one when you are done with them. However, I would recommend reading more information about using a WCF client from MSDN. I've linked to some useful resources on MSDN at the bottom of each of the documentation for each of the code samples.

keit:Is it possible to get category information from target parent?

If you mean to inherit the parent category then yes this is possible. If the parent has a category and inheritance is enabled, when creating a new object if you pass in null for the Metadata parameter it will inherit the parent's category.

Nicolas:Does the category template verify if the value that we want to set is an allowed value ? For exemple for List value or Table SQL base value..?

NO.

The category template only gives the default values (but also the list of valid values). When trying to apply a category to an object its values will be validated on the server before being applied and trying to apply invalid values will return an error.

AlexSZ:What happens If the category exits already?

When creating a new object a category cannot exist since the object doesn't yet exist, so this will only be a question when updating a node. In this case the values of the category will just be updated.

Pierre:I think I missed it, why was there a min value / max on the category ?

The min and max values are for each attribute in the category (attributes can have multiple values). The min and max define the minimum and maximum number of values an attribute can have.

Ruud Bax:What functionality isn't available with webservices yet ?

There isn't a concrete answer for this question. But there is definitely functionality in Content Server that is not covered by CWS.

The services provided by CWS are meant to cover core functionality of Content Server. Other modules need to add their own web services support.

A good example of this is the Records Management module. They have created their own services to add functionality for their module and can be used in conjunction with the core CWS services.

For features that should be part of the core set of CWS services we continually add to the existing services and include these updates in the Content Server cumulative updates. For example, coming in update 9 we have added the ability to run Live Reports to the DocumentManagement service.

Taavi Ilves:I haven't looked up this from documentation, but is it possible to use categories like in LAPI, where we could use category xml -- export and import?

There is an XMLService that allows you to do XML import and export of nodes. So this should work for creating categories. However, for applying categories to objects you will need to use the methods as demonstrated in the code sample.

kamalakar:Do we have any service to retrieve notification from the content server.

NO.

Wilson Cheng:Can WebService interact with Case Mangment Module?

I believe this is a feature request in the Case Management project to add web services support. However, I'd have to defer any specific questions about Case Management to the product manager (Curtis Mutter).

Ruud Bax:CS 10 will be the last version that also supports LAPI ?

LAPI applications still work with CS 10, however, I'm not sure about what sort of LAPI support will still exist for the next version.

NO.

SS:Hi Kyle, will running LiveReport be available for Livelink 9.7.1 WebServices?

YES.

SS:and how about running a WebReport through CWS?

NO.

Taavi Ilves:Is it possible to run function like lapiDocs.SetObjectAttributesXML (from LAPI)

NO.

There is not a similar function in CWS. You will have to use the updateNode call with the Metadata object containing the category values like in the sample code shown.

SS:Will Livelink 9.7.1 get a patch to allow running LiveReports through CWS 9.7.1?

YES.

This will be included in the update 9 patch for Content Server.

The RunReport method will simply return back the raw data from the LiveReport. What you do with it is up to you
