Hi there,

I'm wanting to pre-validate attribute values for Popups and Table Key Lookups prior to building the metadata for a new document. But I can't find anything via web services that gives me access to a list of valid values to validate against.

Is there a way of doing this via web services or is this information not available?

I'm working with CS10 and C#.

Hi Rob,

If you want to validate values you will first need to call GetCategoryTemplate() to get the category definition (including default values and valid values). For popups, the ValidValues field will be defined on the attribute value.

That’s what I was looking into but couldn’t find any valid values property. I also tried GetCategoryDefinition which did give me access to MinValues and MaxValues, but not valid values.

Here’s my code, where the category is TestCat and TestPopup is the second attribute on the category.

DocumentManagement.Node catNode = dc.GetNodeByName(ref dmOTAuth, 2004, "TestCat");

int catId = catNode.ID;

DocumentManagement.AttributeGroup attgroup = new DocumentManagement.AttributeGroup();

attgroup = dc.GetCategoryTemplate(ref dmOTAuth, catId);

DocumentManagement.StringValue attValueS = new DocumentManagement.StringValue();

attValueS.Values = new string[1];

attValueS.Values[0] = "value1";

attValueS.Key = attgroup.Values[1].Key;

attValueS.Description = attgroup.Values[1].Description;

DocumentManagement.AttributeGroupDefinition attgroupDef = new DocumentManagement.AttributeGroupDefinition();

attgroupDef = dc.GetCategoryDefinition(ref dmOTAuth, catId);

Console.WriteLine(attgroupDef.Attributes[1].Type);

The console outputs are:

I’m currently on Update 5, if it makes any difference.

A related question, where is this information stored in the database? I might have to try and access the database directly, or with Update 9 maybe via a Live Report.

Hi Rob,

All you have to do is cast the Attribute objects into the appropriate type (ie. StringAttribute, IntegerAttribute, etc.) and then you will be able to access the ValidValues property. This property isn't defined in the base parent class, which is why you won't see it in your code sample unless you cast it fist.

Apologies for adding to this post but something that came up recently was how one can either determine (assume using GetCategoryDefinition and the attributes therein) or set the 'type' of attribute more precisely?

In other words whether or not the existing 'StringAttribute' is a 'Text: pop-up' or 'Text: Table Key Lookup' ? In this way of course when creating a new 'StringAttribute' apart from setting the ValidValues to be an SQL statement (and not plain text) what else differenciates this string / text attribute (determined by the attribute's 'Type') from that associated with a 'Text: pop-up' ?
