Retrieving an objects category values

Hi at all.

We are trying to retrieve an object's categories' values which can be set in the objects category tab. Unfortunately we are only getting some numbers like: 74380.4.3. Instead of these numbers we want to see the values which we have set at the object's category, e.g. a String like "My comment". What is needed to get these values of a category which is assigned to an object?

The code looks like that:

Hi Stefan,

Each AttributeGroup contains a Values property.

In Java, you can use getValues() to access this array of DataValue objects.

You can use the keys (e.g., 74380.4.3) to map an Attribute and its display name to the corresponding DataValue object instance.

Hi Yves,

You are getting the DataValue objects, but not the values of each DataValue. To get the actual values you will have to cast each DataValue into the appropriate type (ie. StringValue, IntegerValue, etc). This can be quite confusing. It might help to take a look at the categories and attributes sample I posted recently. It is in C# but it should translate fairly easily to Java for you. You can find it here:

Take a close look at how the values are set from the template when creating the document. Notice that each DataValue is first casted into the actual data type instead of referencing it by the parent DataValue type. The key here is that the parent does not define the values, they are only defined in the sub classes, which is why you cannot work directly with the DataValue object.

I tried several times to cast to e.g. StringValue but eclipse was telling me "StringValue is not visible". It drived me crazy. Not unitl a restart of eclipse everyhting is fine.

I've been trying to do the same thing for a long time now and still cannot get it working.

I'm not able to cast the DataValue to StringValue. Below is my piece of code but I always get ClassCastException.

Could you please share how did you do it? Any ideas?

List<DataValue> attributeValue = attributeGroup.getValues();

for( DataValue dataValue : attributeValue){

StringValue stringValue= (StringValue)dataValue;

Hi Pablo,

The error you're receiving implies that the object you are trying to cast is not a StringValue object. It's possible that it's one of the other value types - IntegerValue, DateValue etc.

Try doing a check on the object before casting, something like:

if (dataValue is StringValue) {

StringValue val = (StringValue)dataValue;

}

else if (dataValue is IntegerValue) {

IntegerValue ival = (IntegerValue)dataValue;

}

thanks for you response, but I've already tried casting to all the possible values, but none of them would work.

I'm I retrievieng the List with the values properly? In Jasons Blog he uses CategoryTemplates to set the values, but nothing is said about retrieving the values.

Any ideas?

Looks like you are just missing the call to get the value(s) from the casted dataValue objects. Note that each value is stored in an array as attribute may contain multiple values.

For example:

StringValue stringValue = (StringValue) dataValue;

String[] values = stringValue.getValues();

for (String value : values) {

System.out.println(value);

}

Unfortonuately I can't get that far yet. The problem in Java is when trying to CAST from the DataValue to StringValue (or to any other value type) like in the following line.

StringValue stringValue = (StringValue) dataValue;

This line always throws ClassCastException.

Am I supposed to retrieve the Category Values from the node metadata? Any Ideas?

that is correct. It always goes to No Type found.

I think there might be something wrong with the way that Web Service Classes has been created in the. environment.

If I enhance the lltreeview sample application for Java to retrieve the Category Values of the documents, it works well and is able to Cast to StringValue, so this tells me that there is clearly something wrong with they way the Classes have been created for Web Service Client/SDK.
