Remove "?" from Null fields

I have several reports that show a "?" in fields that have no data. I have tried to remove the question marks to no avail. I am sure it is something simple that I am missing. I am using an SQL database. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you noticed you get a ‘?’ when the database is NULL. So you can use the ISNULL function to display another value.

From the description this will allow you to display an empty string for text columns, but for integer or date columns you need to return an integer or date value.

Try “NVL” or “COALESCE” to replace it with “0” or “n/a” or something else you’d prefer….That’s Oracle. MySQL has “ifnull”.

I must have something wrong in my code because I have tried both of those. I will look again.

What about if you are selecting information from another table and no records exist? that also shows a "?". any suggestions on what do do with that situation?

That depends upon whether you require a record or not. In Oracle, when I require a record in another table to be there, I use “JOIN”. If not, then “Left outer/inner Join”. For those fields when you don’t care if there is a record/row in a secondary or validating table, you would use “ifnull” in the SELECT. Or if the record is required, but the field could be NULL.
