Update the document content with LAPI

Hi All,

I am trying to read the contents of a document and then updating it. Basically a Read/Write operation on a document (an excel doc for example) using LAPI.

Could anyone let me know the best approach to accomplish this ( am a fresher to LAPI)?

Hi Arun,In case you have not known LAPI fell out of OT's programming favorite as of 9.7.1.It has been superceded by EWS/CWS.But that does not prevenyt anyone form using it.as such you will get very less support form the forum as everybody is trying to rack their heads around EWS/CWS.

Secondly LAPI or CWS is a programming language doing what you can do within the livelink gui(at least 90 %).

I will show you what happens when you add/edit a livelink document that has a mime type of Excel so you can understand the livelink parts and the software part that is in your computer.Parantheses terms are almost calls in lapi although oscript is usd in real creation.

Adds a excel browses to a excel document and puts it in a place in livelink where you have access to add it .in livelink a node is created (createobject),a version is added(createversion).The document form your computer lands in livelink's provider .For simplicity let us assume it is EFS.The version now is tagged version 1(Linear versioning assumed)
User clicks 'Edit' in livelink GUI.Livelink downloads a version(FetchVersion) and puts it in your configured place local computer file.If the ActiveX webeditor is active in your browser it calls excel opening software,typically msexcel and you do what you need.In the background the document is reserved by livelink.Note the editing of the document is happening in your computer with client software ,and it has really nothing to do with livelink.Several editing options exist whether you use webdav,EC or activex.
When you say Finish livelink runs a version addition so the original version is still intact you will have a new version and this continues on and on.

All of the above things can be done via lapi,createobject,createversion adds the document and Fetchversion gives you the document.you will be responsible meaning programming the edit.For that I would google for api's that allow that.all the rest you can do with lapi.

Hope that helps there are plenty of lapi samples here and in communities website that explain setup and programming.I have not seen a excel edit sample with lapi so can't help there.

Updating an excel document without some special external libraries would require VBA development.

VB 6 support (similar to VBA) dropped out of LAPI after 9.7.0.

Thanks so much for your views, Appu and Kyle.

As I understand, the documents could be fetched by DAPI calls and if data manipulation needs to be done, something like Apache POI could be made use on the fetched docs.
