Categories "Apply to sub-items" function

Hello,

Is there any method in the CS Webservice to replicate the functionality of "Apply to sub-items" on the catgories page, so that all the subitems inherit the parent folder categories/attributes value?

Is it in DocumentManagement webservice, class UpgradeCategoryItemsContext/UpgradeCategoryItems? If yes, is there any example for this? If not could you please let me know which methods should be called?

The document management service, GetNodesInContainer returns me all the objects under the folder, but now when I want to update the categories of this child objects. I am using the enterprose library service GetObjects, which returns me the elements(along with its category), it works properly for folder, but if its an item/document, the categories are returned as null. Why is this so?

Hi Ashna,

the categories belong to the version rather than the document. That's why you don't have it on document elements.

Rather than getObjects() you could use the method getObjectsEx (https://knowledge.opentext.com/knowledge/piroot/elws/v100201/elws-pgd/en/html/meth-ifelbielservice-getobjectsex.htm), indicate GetItemVariantPairs. Then you get the document and the recent version and thus access to the categories.

Hi Ashna, as far as I know there is no programatic equivalent to "Apply to sub-items" either in Content Server or its WebServices API. I believe it's a very specific feature that is only accessible through the user interface. You can probably role your own solution (as your second post suggests you're doing), but you'll have to manually manage the various options such as "Clear Existing Categories", "Add Version", etc.

would not the user be better served by a "ChunkedOperation". I have seen those examples in the forum.The "chunked" looks like a NodeCrawler implementation that starts

from a starting nodeid and start expending each kid.I am not sure if the developer who is asking the qn is basically in the ELS side of the house which may be a wrapper/and or different code on the standard WS API

Hi Appu, the "Apply to sub-items" feature in Content Server is built using a NodeCrawler. How this translates to an external API like WS or ELS is unknown to me. But yes, some type of traversal is required.

About a year ago I had to address this problem within OScript and resolved it by adding a method to $LLIAPI.AttrData. The method wrapped the _ApplyDown() function of the AttrSetsApplyDown3 WebNodeAction (found in WebAttribute). It's not an elegant solution, but it works. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a WS interface so it doesn't help here.

You are absolutely correct because the current offering does not address thsi within the WS API.
What I meant was basically there was an example that says for doing multi nodes WSAPI has a "Crawler" operation

I looked in the docmanservice code and OT has coded it for specific things like

UpdateNodeRightsContext,UpgradeCategoryItemsContext

If you look you can see the calls doing NodeCrawlers within code.Might have been useful to provide
a generic crawler so the developer could basically get a NodeHandle and do his/her stuff as they see fit.

At least for the current implementation the developer could perhaps find the nodes using SQL queries and probably use it.

BTW we have our own batch framework in oscript which makes huge operations much more easier

here.
