Search with highlighted terms option

I have the Output XML search result from Open Text. Some documents have <HH> tag in <OTSummary> but some documents (especially ones with a lot of content) don't seem to have terms with <HH> tag around them. Once I get the search results, should I be looking for something other than <HH>...</HH> in the XML to get all words that need to be highlighted?

Summaries in search results are static. That is, they do not point to where in the document the terms you were searching for are found, but rather point to the statistically “most important” segment of the content.

If terms you were searching for happen to be in that static summary, then it will be highlighted.

So the <HH> tags you see in the OTSummary region represent the positions in the static summary text that match your search terms.

The search results do not provide a collection of where in the content all possible search terms were matched.

That information is only delivered through a full Hit Highlighting request for the document, which is not exposed through the Search API.

Thank you for the response. The searchAPI guide says we can work with the returned XML to get highlighted terms - does that refer to the summary section or do we have to then use the HitHighlight URL provided with search results to get the actual highlighted terms? I have to display the highlighted terms on a .NET webpage, so is there a way to go about doing that?

The highlighted terms are the ones you would normally see in the GUI, within the OTSummary region.

Just as in the GUI, if you want the full content of each file hit highlighted, you need to access the HitHighlight URL.

Hit highlighting full content is very expensive, as the file needs to be retrieved from the file store, converted to HTML in a format suitable for presentation and hit highlighted.

Trying to do that for every search result would kill performance, which is why that level of highlighting is only on demand.
