Internationalization of Optional Module, Custom Module and in General CS 10 Update 14 Environment

Hi Team,  

Could you please advise in regard of Internationalization of custom modules, some optional modules and in general CS environment for CS 10 Update 14 environment.  

1. What all can be Internationalized for a custom module i.e. apart from custom weblingos.

2. Can form views of form templates be internationalized or form templates/views have to be created for each language.

3. Does Category attribute screen gets internationalized automatically with language packs or it is advised to be internationalized as part of custom modules or the language in which the category/attribute were defined, it will remain same irrespective. 

4. Apart from Folder Names, what else is in scope of internationalization in general in CS.

5. Does out of box email notifications and CS notifications need to be internationalized or they are internationalize automatically with language pack.  

In general, please advise the scope of internationalization in CS, Optional modules and Custom Modules. I believe, only labels (names and descriptions) can be internationalized (that too nodes having globe in front of their names) and nothing regarding the data (metadata or the content).

When you talk about replacing the CS environment from one language to another, there are 2 aspects to it.

One is internationalization and the other is localization.

Internationalization is the process of prepping your custom code for a different locale on a CS environment. With internationalization, you get the authority to change simple words, phrases and sentences alone from one language to another. This is the kind of properties files that we see in the OTS modules from OT. Your custom module’s OSpace must contain a properties file for that particular locale. It is then that the strings & HTML labels are modified to the language of choice.

Localization not only includes simple sentence changes, but also changes the date format, monetary units, measurement units and anything else that pertains to that particular language standard. This comes in the form of core language packs & modular language packs. Once a core language pack is installed, it is necessary to apply the corresponding modular language packs for your optional modules.

Now, let me try to answer your queries.

 

1. What all can be Internationalized for a custom module i.e. apart from custom weblingos.

Nothing else. All that you can internationalize is user messages, strings & text on HTML pages i.e. weblingos.

 

2. Can form views of form templates be internationalized or form views have to be created for each language

Probably, Yes ! What I can think of is to create one single form and then separately control the attribute names w.r.t. your required language via a custom module to recognize your placeholders. I don’t see a need to create different forms for different languages.  After all, form views are also weblingos

 

3. Does Category attribute screen gets internationalized automatically with language packs or it is advised to be internationalized as part of custom modules or the language in which the category/attribute were defined, it will remain same irrespective

It’s called localization. So, LP can only control much of the HTML display i.e. replacing their OT placeholders (Xlates). All HTML aspects do get modified if the relevant modular LP is available for optional modules such as one for Forms and so on. You can also add multilingual named categories & description in that locale, but multilingual attribute names, that definitely depends on how far the LP can support that language.

 

4. Apart from Folder Names, what else is in scope of internationalization in general in CS

Again, it’s called localization and it depends on the how advanced the installed LP is to achieve what you want here. Folder names, general metadata and few others. You will need to look at it more closely with what you really would like to achieve here.

 

5. Does out of box email notifications and CS notifications need to be internationalized or they are internationalize automatically with language pack

Notifications module is already built with placeholders (Xlates) to pick the set locale & display the appropriate strings & tags. So, installing the relevant core language pack should do the trick.
