CSIDE giving out of memory error

In a 10.5 environment, the dashboard of the CRT module will not display correctly under Builder (CSIDE) but works under the service. The most pertinent lines in the console output appear to be out of memory messages.

The error appears to be within CS but possibly subject to memory conditions within Eclipse. I tried increasing the heap size Eclipse uses via the -Xmx option but to no avail:

There are two separate processes when you're running CSIDE: The Eclipse process and the Content Server process (They're both Java processes, if you're looking at the Windows Task Manager). Errors you see in the console view come from the Content Server process. Increasing the heap size in the Eclipse process won't help.

The CS core developer beside me looked up the error and tells me there's a hard-coded limit of 65536 bytes of bytecode per script (OScript is kind of old). A weblingo file gets converted into a single script when it's compiled. So your weblingo file may be too large and may need to be broken up.

Also, you may only see errors like this in CSIDE but not in the CS service process because scripts are compiled differently in the CSIDE/Builder context in order to allow debugging. And scripts that may have been fine prior to 10.5 might hit this limit because literals are now 64-bit so take up more space in byte code.

WebLingo is split up into literal lines (non-code) and Oscript lines (the ones associated with semicolon prefixes or within a semicolon block).

Before compilation, the literal lines simply become Web.Write(theline) and the Oscript code stays as code.

It's that mix of Web.Write lines and Oscript lines that contribute to the post-compilation bytecode size.

So in short, the size of a single WebLingo file -- HTML and Oscript -- is what would need to be reduced.

References to external files don't matter.

Literal data is mostly strings, real numbers and sufficiently large integers, but you'll also see that error message if your script uses too much bytecode (i.e. is too long).

The OScript that converts a WebLingo file into pure OScript behaves differently between CSIDE and when running as a server in order to include more useful information for the developer in the output, and so that line numbers roughly line up between the input and output. This means that a script that's small enough to work when running in server mode will suddenly fail when running in CSIDE.

This has nothing to do with CSIDE itself - the WebLingo compilation code just looks to see if $CSIDE (or $BUILDER) is defined before using the alternatve behaviour - but, along with the conversion to 64-bit integers does mean that WebLingo files that used to work fine in CS10 Builder suddenly stop working in CS10.5 CSIDE.

As Kyle said, lines that don't contain any OScript get converted to lines like:

Web.Write(_f,_l[13])

If you're in debugging mode (as mentioned above) each line gets its own Web.Write. Otherwise, it will glue consecutive lines of HTML/JS/CSS/etc. together and output it all at once.

Hi Support Guys,

We are getting the same problem in the Engineering Management module (specifically, the CRT Dashboard). We checked the crt.html file size and found that it's 155 Kb in size which might causes the issue because it's a lot bigger than the others. So now we're kind of stucked. Everytime we open Eclipse, the CRT Dashboard fails (it shows a blank page) but when we close Eclipse and start the CS service, it works fine.

We cannot do anyting because we do not create this module, it's from OpenText, right?

So... What solution/workaround would you prefer to us so that we can continue our work?

Regarding the CRT module's weblingo file...

OpenText development was aware of this issue and in the upcoming release in December 2014, the HTML will be split into two separate files.

If you need to work with that particular weblingo file for development purposes, you can either split the file yourself in the dev environment or perform your edits external to Eclipse and run Content Server as a service to test it.
