Corrupt OTLocation values

We do searches for emails through the searchservice. The OTLocation field is returned as part of the search-results. A customer gets search results where the OTLocation value contains not only a list of ids but also empty tags like <> or </>.

Example:

OTLocation=<>2000 27105 25906 27436 501836 502607</><>5512 93726 104781 192698</>

Where do these tags come frome? What do they mean? Is this as designed?

The OTLocation values are computed during Extraction of items for indexing.  The Extractor computes the basic value, but due to the extensible nature of the Extractor, other modules are free to add their own OTLocation values as well.  Several other modules are known to do so, such as Communities of Practice,  Classifications, Workflow, Email Management, Enterprise Library and Pulse.  These modules are free to add any OTLocation data they deem appropriate.  Most likely, some module that has extended OTLocation creation is injecting the empty values.

 

With Content Server 10.5 Update 2014-09 (Coming Soon!) we have done considerable work to improve the OTLocation generation.  Uses of OTLocation that were not valuable have been removed (such as Email Management, Enterprise Library).  Each contributor to OTLocation during indexing now includes a metadata attribute to allow construction of queries against specific OTLocation values (eg: <OTLocation source=’core’>2000 27105 …</OTLocation>.

 

Unfortunately, this means some mandatory patches will be needed with the September update from these other modules, and the benefits are primarily “go forward” – new installations or a complete re-indexing.
