How to get all Content Server categories in one call?

I'm currently on a project that involves OpenText Content Server 10.5 SP1 Update 2015-03.

I'm trying to find out if is possible to get all categories from the System Category Volume with one call using Java SOAP web services or REST.

On the web services side I found a couple of methods exposed by the DocumentManagement WSDL GetCategoryDefinition and GetCategoryDefinitions which require categoryIDs as argument.

On the REST side I managed to obtain access to categories but after a quite long trip:

call to otcs/cs.exe?func=search.GetCategoryVolume gives as a response an URL for the subsequent call
call to otcs/cs.exe?func=ll&ObjID=2005&objAction=XMLExport&scope=1 gives the id of the system category volume along with category IDs
call to otcs/cs.exe?func=ll&ObjID=21361&objAction=XMLExport&scope=1 gives the required info about the category.

I would like to have a single call returning all information about categories I need.

Would it be possible to have the SQL query to perform against OT tables?

Is it possible to achieve that?

Based on the methods that you have found:

1. call to otcs/cs.exe?func=search.GetCategoryVolume gives as a response an URL for the subsequent call

You could see if the search API will allow you to continue down this option. Documentation can be found here:

Based on what I can tell, Section 2.2 can give you what you need.

2 & 3. call to call XMLExport which gives the id of the system category volume along with category IDs

You can use Content Web Services (https://knowledge.opentext.com/knowledge/cs.dll/Open/ContentWebServices) to access xmlExport method to extract the same information that you would use on the URL.

It is really up to you which method you prefer. Both methods will produce an output that you can then parse.

It is worth mentioning that Content Server a.k.a Livelink Categories can be created wherever the creating user have permissions like a folder.Many companies keep them in other places other than the categories volume.So if you are designing a product or something your code will fail to find all categories in such a company.To get around that I would suggest doing this.

select dataid,ownerid,parentid ,name from dtree where subtype=131 .This can be executed as DB query or a Live Report thru WSAPI/LAPI.If this check gives you the ownerid as the id of the categories volume then you can rest assured that all of them are in the Categories Volume.The storing in that volume is just a convenience aspect fo rthe GUI to start at a particular point and is usually open permission wise to the caller a.k.a Public Access.

Trying to follow the web services path, and located the Export XML method into XMLService, could you please tell me where I can find the allowed values for the request?

I mean, nodeID is self-explaining but what about the other fields?

For example I tried to set the Scope field to the value of 'sub' as reported into the manual but it gives me error.

CWS offers a GetRootNode() method in the DocumentManagement service which provides you with the node representing a particular volume. If you pass in “CategoriesWS”, it will give you the node representing the Categories Volume.

You can then use ListNodes or ListNodesByPage to list children of that volume, giving you all the categories stored in that location.
