Programatically change GIF for a folder on individual items

Hi,

I could have sworn that I've seen this documented before, and it may actually be an ActiveView thing or it's to do with the presentation, but is there any way to change the GIF on a folder to something other than the standard icon, or have other icons show up beside it? The idea is, the user executes a custom command on a particular folder, and while that operation is running, the folder icon either changes or has an additional info icon beside it which indicates the operation is in progress, then when complete, the icon display reverts to normal.

I know that I can override the various browse web-lingos to do whatever I want, but I'm trying to do this particular customization without doing any weblingo or core oscript overrides. Those types of customizations don't survive upgrade as well as others.

Hi Hugh,

There is a column in DTree where you can specify the icon. Just enable the selection of custom icons for folders, select one and see how it is stored.

There is also a callback that allows you to add icons behind the name, like the new icon.

For the performance the first option is better.

Thanks Hans,

That was exactly what I needed. For posterity, what I did was I set the node's .pGIF feature and ran llNode.NodeUpdate() on the DAPI Node. This changed the image. To change it back, I simply set node.pGIF to Undefined, and it works. And you can do this with the settings to allow custom icons turned off as that's just a GUI switch.

There may already be a value there, so you cannot just set it to undefined.

Actually, for this client I can as they never enabled the ability for users to set icons nor intend to do so. But for a wider deployment, I may need to check that. In that case, I'd need to store whatever the contents were while I'm performing my work.

I explored the "other" option yesterday. It's a good option *if* you need to add an icon *beside* the object icon - a similar placement as the "new", the "modified", or "hold" icons that appear beside the item image. See the image below for a quick-start on how to orphan it and what to set (OK I have some time on my hands today).

If you want to use this feature, it is best to consider the conditions that require the item to have the image. If they involve a long running SQL, this option should be avoided as you would be introducing the same long running SQL on every single browse. On a big system that can really add up. I was considering using this approach to flag all items that are in a folder tree that has a custom operation beinf performed on it, until I realized I would be executing a query against DTreeAncestors for every single browse which gets really expensive really quickly. But it was an interesting exploration into how this relatively unknown feature works.
